asp
If you or your kids are not one of thousands of Bay Area kids who
have visited this special place, they open it up on the 4th Saturday
of every month for guided tours.  This is the former ranch of a
Walnut Creek pioneer and includes a blacksmith shop, farm
equipment displays, lots of goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, and
cattle cared for by the local 4-H, and a seasonal pond.  Details on
the farm, a map, school/group info can be found at the above link.

Chabot Space and Science Center,Oakland
chabotspace.org/
Chabot, in the Oakland Hills has something for everyone from
hands-on demonstrations and interactive learning stations to a
first-class planetarium, observatory, and an IMAX theater.  As one
might imagine, it is largely geared towards space and the
exploration thereof, but that definition does not do it justice.  There
is also a kids area for kids under around 10 or so where they can
do projects, dress up, and play.

Lawrence Hall of Science, Berkeley
http://www.lhs.berkeley.edu
LHS is all about hands-on.  While it may pale in scale to the
Exploratorium, it accomplishes many of the same goals:  making
science fun, accessible, and exciting.  The exhibits upstairs
include travelling and staff-designed shows and the downstairs
features very popular science and nature classes and camps.
Outdoors there are stunning views of SF as well as life-sized and
over sized whales and DNA that the kids can play on. The place is
also popular for birthday parties.

Lindsay Wildlife Museum, Walnut Creek
http://www.wildlife-museum.org
Lindsay has a number of things going for it besides being simply
a place to see local fauna up close.  It has a GREAT playground in
back along with expansive fields to run around in.  It has great
classes and camps.  But it also has areas for kids to play and
explore.  They can learn how insects are structured, they can see
up close the various habitats around the home where animals
live, they can touch and feel various animal bits and have access
to a decent reference library.  In the main area, the staff maintain a
collection of local animals from owls to raccoons to mountain
lions and coyotes.

Lucky Ju-Ju Pinball Museum, Alameda

You know, you just have to visit this place.  It is home to all sorts of
vintage pinball machines (operational) and some incredible local
art.

Weds - Thur and Sundays 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 a.m.
This is a great rainy day place to go (and even some sunny days)
with kids.  They have all sorts of promotions like $1 games on
Thursday and Fridays (shoe rental is extra).  Check the website for
details.

Among the many nice features are automatic bumpers that pop up
when a bumper-requiring bowler's frame comes up, automatic
scoring, and fun graphics.
This is also a wonderful place for
birthday parties!

Children's Fairyland,Oakland
http://www.fairyland.org/
Fairyland is a very sweet place along Lake Merritt in Oakland.  It is
probably best suited for children in Kindergarten and younger.
That being said, it is wonderful with areas to explore, animals to
see, story-themed attractions, and a steady stream of musical,
dramatic, and cultural events and other top-notch kids
entertainment on weekends.  If you have young kids, it is worth the
visit.

Oakland Zoo, Oakland
http://www.oaklandzoo.org/
One of our favorite zoos.  The exhibits are well-designed and fairly
close together and the animals are healthy and happy.  There is a
small amusement park on the grounds with kiddie rides and a
train, but the animals are why you go of course.  Going in the early
morning is best since the animals are at their friskiest.

Pixie Playland, Concord

Studio Grow, Berkeley and Concord
http://www.studiogrow.com/
Geared for the pre-school child, Studio Grow is a drop-in space
where kids and their parents can either explore on their own or
take part in organized play and musical activities.
